Epigenetic mechanisms associated with vulnerability and resilience to psychiatric disease will be the subject of a presentation by Dr Kevin Dudley, of the Psychiatric Epigenomics Laboratory within the Queensland Brain Institute at The University of Queensland on Wednesday 8 June 2011.

The impact that stressful encounters have on long-lasting behavioural outcomes is varied. Whereas many people will develop "stress-related" conditions such as post-traumatic stress disorder, many others are considered "resilient", and are able to cope with stress and avoid psychopathology. The reason for this heterogeneity is undoubtedly multi-factorial, involving a complex interplay between genetic and environmental factors occurring throughout development.

At the molecular level, developmental processes are regulated by epigenetic mechanisms. In this presentation I will talk about work being undertaken in our lab and others, suggesting that epigenetic modifications may play an important role in stress-related psychiatric disease.
