Family history is an important significant risk factor for many psychiatric and neurological disorders implying an important contribution of genetic factors to their etiology. The epigenome represents a possible missing link between genetics, disease and the environment, a link between all DNA properties (not just its sequence) and gene expression.
QBI molecular geneticists apply molecular methods, including next generation sequencing, to identify and explore function of genetic variants that contribute to risk of neuro-psychiatric disease. QBI statistical and quantitative geneticists develop and apply novel methodology to explain individual differences between people. QBI epigeneticists study how the genome is connected to the environment and how this relationship shapes behaviour throughout our lives.
